The sacred places with natural security in Ebonyi State

Various communities in Ebonyi State has their sacred places that serves as natural security to them during any adversity. In Okposi, we have a number of them. They are:-

  • Aja Mgbom deity protects its devotees from accidents, armed robbery and misfortunes of all kinds when the rules of the deity are strictly observed.
  • Ogbugba is a deity found in the present day Okposi Achara. Its main function is to guide its devotees from adultery and infidelity in their marriages with heavy consequences on defaulters. The green snake which is its sacred symbol cannot be killed or harmed anywhere within old Ohaozara.
  • Nwannachima (found in Mgbom Okposi) is a goddess of fertility. It is a sacred cave with a body of water, from which water is fetched for barren women to enable them conceive. Hence, after the birth of such child, he or she will be named after the goddess Chima Mgbum Ike. The symbol of this deity is catfish which is not meant to be killed.
  • Abanivi deity (found in Mebiowa) stands for pure moral life and guides against misfortune.
  • Esuecharaugu is a deity that stands for justice.
  • Ezembunegu is purely for security of any individual or property bequeathed to the deity.
  • Anyimanyi Oduogo is used to ensure victory during war between the community and any other community.
  • Agunabani is for the security against the enemy.
  • Odenigbo is said to ensure victory at war and bring success in business.
  • Odoma Ameluagu is a deity for security and welfare.
  • Enuata fields against bad omen and misfortune.
  • Anamiya is a goddess that brings about victory and security.
  • Onyukwu is a goddess of fertility and property. Sacrifices to appease this god are taken at a shrine called ogidi at Mgbom community.
