Visitors to Canada can now work for up to 2 years

In the past, it was difficult for people that arrive in Canada with Visitor Visa to work in Canada. Things have changed with the looming Labour shortage in most Westerns nations including Canada. Canada made this decision to allow Visitors to Canada to Work for up to Two years to help the employers in Canada facing significant labour challenges secure  experienced personnel to fill up important positions.

This decision to allow visitors to Canada to apply for temporary work visa for up to 2 years was made on February 28th 2023. This policy will be available for up to February 28th 2025.

To be eligible to apply to Work in Canada for up to Tow Years, an applicant looking to benefit from this temporary public policy must

• have valid status in Canada as a visitor on the day they apply
• have a job offer that is supported by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment
• submit an application for an employer-specific work permit no later than February 28, 2025
• meet all other standard admissibility criteria

It is also important to note that the work permit is a CLOSED work permit. A closed work permit is tied to an employer. This means that you can only work for the employer that provided you the job offer. An OPEN work permit is a permit that gives the holder the opportunity to work for any employer.

3. Students that complete at least one year of full-time studies in Canada will get an OPEN work permit for one year.
4. Students that complete two years of full-time study example Diploma program in a college or masters degree in a university  will get  three years OPEN work permit.
