Dr. Okonjo Iweala wins WTO DG position: First woman and the first African to lead the World Trade Organization
Dr. Okonjo Iweala emerged victorious after a keenly contested race of the Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO). Reports also indicated that United states of America tried to veto and block the nomination. USA has been critical of WTO’s handling of world trade . They preferred the South Korea's Yoo Myung-hee as better candidate to fix the trust issues in the WTO.
Iweala however emerged winner with 104 votes out of 164 members that voted in the election.
In an interview, Dr Iweala was asked why she thinks she is the best candidate for this position and what she feels about her critics that claimed that he has no finance experience. In addressing the question, Iweala explained that she is the most qualified because she has handled trade issues both as minister, and a world bank executive in charge of trade. According to her, as an economist and a former finance minister, she had handled challenging technical micro finance issues bothering on empowering emerging economies to increase liquidity and create jobs.
Dr. Okonjo Iweala has therefore become the first woman and the first African to lead the World Trade Organization. This is a huge achievement not only of her but also to the entire African union. Prior to the final vote, the African union endorsed her candidacy.
