#EndSARS: Every community should develop and implement a Strategic Youth Development Plan.
Events of the past 3 weeks via the #EndSARS protests have demonstrated the anger of the youth against bad governance in Nigeria.
About 70% of the Nigerian population are below the age of 35 years.
If we invest in the youth, they become a huge asset. For any community to achieve sustainable development, young people must have skills and jobs. But if Nigeria continues on its current trajectory of tokenism and palliatives when it comes to the youth, we should expect a bigger uprising in the future. None of us will be safe including the middle class because top politicians may escape and leave us at the mercy of the hangry youths.
Therefore, I strongly recommend that every community in AlaIgbo and Nigeria at large should use the remaining period of the year to Develop a 5-year Strategic Youth Development Plan and implement it from 2021. In the document, specific roles must be assigned to everyone including traditional rulers cabinet, town unions, religious groups, alumni associations, community-based organisations, political associations, public officers, government, etc. There should also be a monitoring framework for its implementation.
If Covid-19 and #EndSARS don't teach us anything this year, then we may have to wait for a war to teach us better... God forbid!
It's time for action. O ruo la nụ na omume.
